have you tried one of the many recipes found on the internet? normally French bread is used
They have the space but you absolutely must call and pre arrange a gathering of that size.
There are two to choose from - chicken and andouille sausage or seafood with okra. I tried the seafood with okra. I did not like and I not finish it. I'm from Dallas and I must say that the gumbo from Razzoos is better.
No they don't
Yes they will offer traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The Gumbo shop has closed down I was three weeks ago.
Simply not important. Food, service and ambience terrific
Yummy gumbo & jamBalaya. If you haven't been there before, get the combination plate, a bit of everything. Although the food is good, the portions are very small, therefore overpriced in my opinion. Service was okay, not great. The restaurant is very cool and nostalgic. I'd definitely go there again.
Great Gumbo, listen if you are on vacation go here. The price is a little high for normal gumbo but, you can't go wrong here. Flavor is fantastic and the staff moved really quick.
Soooo good! Our first dinner in New Orleans, and we were not disappointed. The service was great, I think our waitresses name was Cari, she was very friendly and attentive. If you get dessert, the pecan brownie is off the chain. We want to go back before we leave.
Server Damien helped make for a special evening, he is charming, smart, and gracious. I rarely drink, but my dinner companion talked me into a fresh strawberry daiquiri, which was terrific (fresh berries, not some sickly sweet mix), he had a fresh banana, equally as good. Tried their gumbo sampler (3 different cups) as well as their veggie option. All were some of the best we found (and we tried more than 6 restaurants this trip). A place to return to.
I might have had the greatest waiter I have ever experienced. I wish I could remember his name two weeks later, but alas, I cannot. He was a strapping black gentleman with braces, an extremely in depth knowledge of the menu, and very good verse of how things actually came out of the kitchen. After a round of gumbo we all let this gentleman order for us and were not disappointed. I wish I could give this establishment a 6th star.
We go every time we visit!! Worth every penny. Worth the wait at the door.
Cool location- if taking a cab have it drop you off a few blocks away and walk. The menu is nice and reasonably priced I think the drinks are just okay and the quality of the food is good. Would eat here again, service was adequate but not exceptional.
Short wait on Sunday night at 6pm even though the place is crowded. The food is excellent and portion is really reasonable. We were able to try the seafood and chicken/sausage gumbo along with jambalaya and shrimp creole as sides. Excellent food and excellent service.
Fantastic staff and food. We didn't have to wait, even on a busy day. The menu is sussinct but full of high quality options. Went with my vegetarian friend and they had a separate menu with vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options! Sitting outside in the open air made the experience even better. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a quick, tasty bite.
There's an indoor seating area in the restaurant and an outdoor seating area in an enclosed garden. The waiter was amazing! He recommended the gumbo combination for me, which wasn't on the menu. My favorite was the turkey hot sausage gumbo. FYI: The restaurant is open on Mondays. In Yelp, it says the restaurant is closed on Mondays, but that's false.
The Gumbo Shop is a classic New Orleans restaurant with an antique vibe and well-organized service. The food came out quickly and both the Seafood Gumbo and Jambalaya were incredibly delectable. This was the first place I ate at in New Orleans, and it definitely didn't fail to surprise me. Thumbs up and 5/5 stars all-around.
Absolutely lovely! Our servers were great, super friendly and funny, and very helpful. As a vegetarian I was very pleased to finally get to try Gumbo, and their veggie friendly gumbo was fantastic. Best meal I had in NOLA. Also, their creamed spinach was perfect. The photo is a bit green and boring, but 10/10, delicious.
Great gumbo, the bread is amazing!! Real fruit daiquiris are the best And our service was 5 star! Great job Destiny! Price was awesome too!
Fun. Different. Great service. Try the blackened marinated chicken with mashed potatoes for the non-gumbo fans. Bread pudding is insanely delicious. One desert is rich enough for two or three people. Great!
Great food and great service. I had the sampling menu and not a single dish disappointed. The service was prompt and the staff was delightful. This is a smaller place so reservations may be necessary during busy times. But if you Are visiting New Orleans it is a must see. Only a block or 2 from Jackson square.
Good selection, cute atmosphere very crowded. The food was a little bland for authentic New Orleans, but I think it's great for travelers who might have a more bland taste. They have vegetarian options! Food would be better if it was hot. But that could've been just due to the server or a very busy night. Get the pecan pie dessert here & the sazerac
We just arrived in the French Quarter from Minneapolis, MN. We stopped in the Gumbo Shop for a quick meal of red beans and rice with sausage. Absolutely delicious, with generous portions served with crusty bread and butter. Also we highly recommend the house dressing which we had on a side salad.
The gumbo and jambalaya we tried are both very flavorful and we are glad that we got to try something new. My only complaint would be that the rice was a bit undercooked on the gumbo so sometimes you'd get a bite with just hard pieces of rice. And on the jambalaya the opposite was true. Some parts just seemed too over cooked and mushy, but it wasn't to the point of being inedible. We did eat it and the flavours and spices were great so no regrets here.
This place is incredible. There was a bit of a wait to be seated, but it was entirely worth it. Our server was pleasant, gave us great recommendations, and checked in on us just the right amount. Our food was absolutely divine. The gator sausage was delicious, gumbo was perfect. I had one of their specials of the day: a crab cake on top of blackened salmon. I'm very picky about salmon, and I can say that was the best salmon I've had to date. We rounded off our meal with their delicious bread pudding. The whiskey sauce that it's in make your taste buds sing. Or at least mine did!The next time we go to New Orleans, we'll definitely be back to the Gumbo Shop.
Our dinner at the Gumbo Shop was great!! Juan was an incredible server, he worked hard to make sure we had a great experience. I have dietary restrictions and he walked me through the menu and even checked ingredients on items that were specials not on the menu. Their gluten free menu includes a good selection of Cajun food which isn’t always easy to find on gluten free menus! We were very satisfied with our visit. The fresh fruit daiquiris were a special touch too!
I went around 4:00 and there was about a 10 minute wait. I was surprised how quickly we got in! I got the jumbalya and it was very good and flavorful! A little spicy but not bad at all. The staff was very friendly and I would recommend this restaurant.
The place will be crowded on most days peak hours. But it will definitely be worth the weight. The only vegetarian entree option is the Veg Creole Dish of the day, which will be a bean gumbo. Tastes great and would definitely recommend spicing it up with the Cajun seasoning and Hot sauce. Not a bad idea to finish off a meal with the pecan pie and vanilla ice cream.
Awesome food! A mist try if you are in the area. There was a long queue to get in, but it was worth the wait. Friendly staff and good service too.
It was busy and we had a large party with children so we were difficult guests, but we were served promptly and very professionally. I wish I could remember our server's name because she was fantastic. The food was great and a good price. The three-course dinner option was great because it made sure we got the brownie dessert which was phenomenal.
Friend and I went for lunch after running the New Orleans marathon. Didn't have to wait. All in all, we had the blackened fish nuggets, Creole Combination Platter, the chicken gumbo, the chicken po-boy, and the warm bread pudding. Everything was fantastic. Not expensive either. Loved the experience, the food, the prompt service. Also really liked all the seasonings on the table, and used them quite liberally.
The food was decent but I wasn't blown away. I had the chicken gumbo and my friend had the red beans and rice. While edible not memorable. It was unfortunate that our rice wasn't fully cooked, as several of our bites of rice were crunchy. I'm gonna guess there's better gumbo in NOLA and I look forward to finding it.
Been coming here for 30 years probably. Always good. Always reliable. Professional, friendly service. Charming place. Really good food. The fresh fruit daiquiris were a hit this visit.
The crabcakes were good but the sauce was a bit overpowering. The soup trio was a great way to sample multiple gumbos, but I don't know if they were worth the price. We had stopped by earlier in the day, and the line was halfway down the block. We returned closer to closing time, and were able to walk right on in.
GREAT food for a modest price. Service was kind and quick even when it was packed. If I come back to new orleans I'm making sure to eat here again. P.S. Try the hot sauce.
Quite the experience. Solid food. Interesting courtyard. Been too long to comment on individual meals, as I was there in November. My wife's gumbo is better, but that isn't their fault. Solid wait staff. A good experience overall. And different from Desire which we also liked but for opposite reasons
We were a party of 8, we waited 1 hour to be seated and it has been another hour and we still waiting for our food... Has been 2 hours, not kidding...I feel the necessity to update my review, the waiting was awful but when the food arrived I was impressed of the flavors! The jambalaya was exquisite, well all the dishes were. Probably not a great place to go if you are a large crowd.
The place has a giant lineup. Good? Yes very good. Unsure if specifically worth the wait, but the food did not leave me disappointed. The alligator sausage is not on the menu. It's on request only, and is $8.99. It's good for the novelty, but unsure if worth it as a repeat item.Chicken and sausage gumbo was recommended over the seafood one. It was very good. Portions are reasonable, but you could easily share 3 entrées and 2 appetizers between 2 people.Server was very nice and attentive. Made the experience very enjoyable, and he was genuine in giving recommendations and make sure everything was OK.
This was an OK stop. After some recommendations about this being THE place for gumbo it was just OK. Gumbo was straight forward but nothing special. Salad and bread was OK. Jambalaya wasn’t that great. The service was pretty good, not amazing. Better to look for something better in the Quarter.
Damien Sr was an excellent waiter. He took very good care of me with a big smile. The red beans and rice were fantastic. I always enjoy my meals here. I love the ambiance of the building and the patio.
Unfortunately, my wife and I were not pleased. We both ordered the combination and the gumbo as well as the jambalaya were the only things that we somewhat enjoyed. Our food was room temperature at best if not cold and the shrimp creole was way too soupy. I wish we could have had a better experience.
This is a safe choice for good New Orleans food at a price that won't break the bank. The alligator sausage was tasty and the creole combination platter a nice option to enjoy various flavors. The pecan pie "a la mode" didn't disappoint at all.The staff was patient and made excellent recommendations. I'll definitely send my friends and family visiting New Orleans.
Wandering the french quarter you have a lot of options and some of them can be questionable at best. We were delighted with our food and service at the Gumbo Shop and want to thank our waiter Mike for his excellent service. Service aside, we sat in a intimate courtyard and had a memorable meal. The wife had the Chicken and Sausage gumbo of course and I had the special of the day which was some broiled shrimp in a wine sauce something something something. All I know was we were both really happy with the food. Portions were giant and the food was excellent.
The Gumbo Shop is delicious and thankfully it's centrally located in the French Quarter. The chicken and sausage gumbo and the etouffe are the standouts here. If it's your first time then the sampler should be your choice because you get a taste of every major dish on the menu. Don't let the line worry you because it moves extremely quickly.
Food was pretty good and prices were decent for NOLA. Best part was the staff. One of my party is a particularly picky eater and they removed the cost of her meal even though there was nothing wrong with it and we didn't complain at all. I wish all places had this much pride in their work.
Gumbo here is great, and should be given the name. I preferred the seafood gumbo over chicken andouille one but I liked them both. Jambalaya combo with shrimp creole plate was also great. So many good dishes. The prices here were very fair and the service was good. It’s worth the wait and would love to come back again.
My whole experience was incredible. The staff were incredibly friendly and thoughtful (thanks Dorian! ) , the ambiance was great (we sat outside in the courtyard), the food was quick and very well priced. I had the gumbo (pictured below) and it was so good (the person with me had the red beans and rice which was also amazing). I was looking forward to Cajun cuisine and was so happy to find it here! Highly recommend it to any travelers, one of the best places we visited in New Orleans.
This was one of the few restaurants where I could try Creole Cajun cuisine for vegetarians. The food was really good, service was good as well it’s a nice cozy place in French quarter. I would recommend this place if you are a vegetarian and wanted to try creole style food.
The place is tiny, the food is amazing, worth waiting 30 min to get seated. Service is fast. They even have a cute patio to sit in and enjoy your Creole dinner. Price is also reasonable. It seems that they don’t take advantage of their spot to overprice their food, which is great. I lien this place! 👍
I am a vegetarian and this was the best place I found in New Orleans for Creole/Cajun food that was vegetarian! While other places might have zero or one menu item that is vegetarian friendly, Gumbo Shop has several. The veg special and the gumbo were both delicious. If you are a vegetarian and you don't want to miss out on the flavors of New Orleans food, you should eat here!
Best gumbo I've had in my life. Went here on the last day of our visit to NO, and we were all completely floored at the authentic, delicious taste. Will be sure to visit again next time I'm in town
This place is amazing .... the Cajun Trio I have pictured here rocks. I have been here three times the last two years. One time the waiter was so amazing I was hugging him on the way out. Good LA beer selection and all your Cajun favorites. Often crowed but well worth the wait.
Absolutely loved the food. We tried both the seafood and chicken gumbo as appetisers and shared the blackened catfish as a main. The catfish was so simple yet full of flavour and came with a delicious buttery mash potato. Would definitely come back!
Was walking through the streets when I smelled this place from outside. We took our chances and went in figuring if it smells this good from the outside, it has to be a good meal. We were not wrong. Great Creole inspired dishes, very friendly staff and quick service!
All of the food was outstanding. The gumbo was rich, the étouffée was flavorful, the jambalaya had a perfect heat and the red beans and rice were creamy. All of them were perfect in their own way and I'm so happy I got to try each of them. For me the gumbo and the jambalaya were the best, but I would absolutely order them all again! The weather was nice so I sat on their patio to enjoy the fresh air while I ate my meal and drank a few beers
